Would you benefit from stump grinding?
Each customer, we have found, has a slightly different end goal in mind when they call us for stump grinding. There are many reasons to get stumps removed. Here are some of the most common client goals:
- Mowing. The chore of mowing is easier when you don’t have to watch out for obstacles or risk damaging your lawnmower.
- Prevent injury. Get the stump removed before your child or grandkid trips and hurts themselves. Save yourself a twisted ankle!
- Clear the way for structures. Many customers want to install sheds, concrete pads, pole barns, new fences, patios, and pools, and stumps are often in the way of their plans.
- Prevent damage to existing structures. Trees growing near foundations, driveways, etc. can cause damage and lead to costly repairs long term.
- Lower the risk of pests. Stumps can be breeding grounds for insects near your home or business.
- Improve the appearance of the landscape. Remove unsightly stumps to reclaim more usable space and beautify your yard.
What kind of stumps can we remove?
Tallahassee and the surrounding area is full of trees of various types, and you might be wondering what kind of stumps we can remove. We can grind pretty much any stump! However, we do have some considerations that we go through when looking at your project and giving you an estimate, including the type of wood, age of the stump, how deep we need to grind, how wide the surface root structure spreads, size (including diameter and height), etc.
There is no such thing as a “regular” or “standard” stump, since every one is different. To some people a 24-inch-diameter stump is big, and to other people the same stump is considered medium sized. Most stumps we grind are between 12 inches and 36 inches in diameter. Their root structure is firmly beneath ground level, and they are cut 1 foot above the ground or lower.
But we can grind anything! Uprooted stumps, stumps with large masses of roots that protrude above the grass, stumps that are cut 3-feet high (we will cut off the extra height before grinding).
We grind softer woods like pine as well as the extremely dense woods like live oak and cherry.
It is also possible to do stump grinding in problematic areas, like stumps that are next to a fence or have special considerations. We will walk through a plan of action with you to make sure we can achieve your goals and give you the best price possible.
How does stump grinding work?
If you have never used Stump Grinding Tallahassee services before, here is what you can expect. First, contact us via phone or send a request via our quote form on this website. We will be in touch with you as soon as possible to discuss the overview of your needs and coordinate a plan for coming out to see the stumps in person.

We will drive to you and look at the stumps, determine the best access for our equipment, and talk about details regarding your exact goals and how to best achieve them. Many companies don’t do this enough. In fact, we often re-grind stumps left behind by another company because they did not fully understand the needs of the customer and did not complete the job satisfactorily.
It is important to us to make sure we are on the same page and understand each other. And if us grinding your stumps is not the best solution for your situation, we will tell you honestly. But if we can truly help you, we will give you our best price estimate.
When we do an on-site estimate, we usually have the stump grinder machine with us. Ninety percent of the time, if the estimate sounds good to you, we can grind the stump same-day. This usually works out very well for everyone. Or, we schedule the job for a day based on your availability.
Then we grind the stumps. A standard grind for us is about 6 to 8 inches below the grade of the ground around the stump so you don’t run into issue with the roots jutting around the perimeter.
After grinding, you have several options for cleanup. For smaller stumps, the wood chips nicely fill in the hole made by the grinder. For larger stumps, the quantity of wood chips is greater than will fit in the hole. We can push the chips into a pile, smooth them out relatively flat, or haul them away for a fee. Many homeowners choose to dispose of the woods chips themselves for gardening purposes.
After the job is completed to your satisfaction, only then do you pay, and enjoy the improvement to your yard!
How much do we charge to grind a stump?
We have a $100 minimum to do a job but there is no standard price per stump. Pricing depends on a lot of factors that need to be visually assessed before we can give you an estimate. Here are some factors that go into a price:
- Size of stump. We look at the diameter of the stump as well as how high above ground it extends.
- Type of tree. Some wood types are denser and harder to grind than others.
- Amount of raised root structure. The roots on some trees create a raised area in your yard, even though the roots are technically underground. Many customers want this root mound leveled off with the surrounding terrain.
- Required depth of grinding. For many customers, 6-8 inches below ground level is plenty because they just want to put sod down over it. Other client goals, such as pouring concrete or putting in fenceposts, where the stump is, require deeper grinding.
- Ease of access. Sometimes we need to remove part of a fence or get creative to access the stump, which can add to the amount of work on our end.
- Amount of clean-up. “Grind it and leave it” is the cheapest option. We can also pile up the chips nicely, spread them out evenly, or haul them away (for a price).
As you can see, there are a lot of factors that go into pricing stump grinding, and although we can sometimes give a “ballpark” estimate over the phone, we really need to see the job to give you the best price possible.
Why not just rent a stump grinder and do it yourself?
You’re certainly welcome to do the job yourself! If that is your style, more power to you. You can rent a grinder at places like Home Depot and spend the day working away at your stumps. Many people are perfectly happy with this DIY route.
However, we’ve heard from many customers how much easier it is to use our services. When considering doing it yourself, there are factors to consider besides just the cost of the equipment rental. Ask yourself a few of these questions:
How much power will the machine have to grind through a hardened live oak stump or a dense cherry?
Will a higher powered machine put you above your budget? Will the size of machine you select be quick enough to justify the extra headache of a rental?
Have you thought about how you will haul the machine to your job and then return it to the store? What are the odds you will have to deal with a breakdown? Will the job take you all day to complete?
After considering all factors, many people make the decision to hire a company that is already equipped to grind stumps quickly, thoroughly, at a price rivaling the total cost of renting a grinder yourself.
